We have already shared some tips for cycling in the rain. But what should you look out for in winter? Snow and ice may seem like "final bosses" to cyclists, but with the right equipment and preparation you can get on your (e-) bike without worry even in winter. We have summarized the most important recommendations for you:
- Do I need winter tires?
Switching to winter tires can provide better control when driving on snow and ice. Thanks to the spikes, snow-covered or icy bike paths can be ridden more safely and confidently. The Simply.Lift SE is already equipped with thick winter tires - so changing the tires is not necessary. It is completely sufficient to lower the air pressure slightly - this ensures more grip.
- Take care of the battery
If you want to use your electric bike regularly in winter, you should definitely take the battery into your home overnight. The battery should also not be left outside in the cold for too long during the day - it is best to remove the battery and take it with you to the office.
If the range is not sufficient for you, a second battery wrapped up warm and carried with you may be the solution.
Please don't forget: If you don't want to use your e-bike in winter, the battery should definitely be stored indoors. The optimal battery capacity for storage is approximately between 30 and 80 percent. Even if the battery is not being used, it should be charged from time to time during the winter months to avoid deep discharge.
- Check lighting
In winter it gets dark earlier and visibility deteriorates considerably - so check regularly whether your bike's lights are working properly. Additional light sources in the form of an LED bike helmet or LED bike backpack ensure that you are better seen by other road users.
- lubricate the chain

- Don't dress too warmly
Wearing lots of thick layers prevents heat from escaping from your body, which can lead to overheating. It's also difficult to move when you're wearing clothes that are too thick - which makes cycling less fun. Overdressing can also lead to excessive sweating. If you notice that you're sweating, your cycling clothes are too warm.
When choosing clothing, always take your bike type and riding style into account – it’s best to just experiment a little.
A great option can be a battery-powered heating vest . You can wear this under your jacket if you need extra warmth.
- Keep your head and neck warm
Since you lose a lot of body heat through your head, it is important to keep your head and neck warm (this also makes riding in cold temperatures much more comfortable). A merino wool under-helmet balaclava not only protects the sides of your head, but also your ears and neck. Even a "winter helmet" with fewer ventilation slots will keep you nice and warm.
- Protect your hands
Good gloves that don't get in the way when braking are a must for winter clothing. We recommend gloves with the so-called "lobster cut", which, unlike finger gloves, keeps the fingers together for more warmth.
- Don’t forget to drink!
Even if you are less thirsty in winter, don't forget to drink enough. A warm drink in a thermos makes even the coldest ride more pleasant!
- Watch out for fogged-up glasses
If you wear glasses and a balaclava, vapour from your breath can freeze on the lenses and impair your vision. In sub-zero temperatures, you should therefore use contact lenses if possible.
- Drive carefully!
You should also adapt your driving style to the conditions:
- Keep your distance
- Reduce support level/speed
- Do not pedal or brake when cornering
- Avoid steering movements on black ice, roll out without braking
