For young and old: transporting children with an e-cargo bike

Für Groß und Klein: Kinder mit dem E-Lastenrad transportieren

We already know that e-bikes are a great way to get from A to B quickly and in an environmentally friendly way. In fact, in many cases they are increasingly replacing cars - also when it comes to transport. E-bikes, and especially e-cargo bikes, are ideal for transporting children, for example.

A big advantage of e-bikes is the support of an electric motor, which makes trips much easier. Electric bikes make it easier to get going and allow you to cover longer distances without any problems. This is particularly convenient if you want to take larger (=heavier!) children or passengers who cannot yet ride a bike themselves with you.

When you think of transporting children with an e-cargo bike, you immediately think of the large single- or double-track models with a large transport box in the front. It is obvious that children can be transported wonderfully with the so-called long johns or e-cargo tricycles, but these models also have some disadvantages compared to longtail bikes - the classic postal or bakery cargo bikes. Cargo bikes with a large front transport box are generally bulkier, you need more space to store or park them. They are less practical if you want to do a simple trip without a load and they are significantly more expensive to buy. A longtail e-cargo bike hardly differs from a "conventional" bike in terms of size and weight and can still keep up with its long john "relatives" when it comes to transporting children. It is also much more maneuverable and comfortable to ride.

When choosing the right e-bike for transporting children, you should choose a model that is lightweight, has a stable construction and does not have a center of gravity that is too high. It should also have good suspension or robust tires to ensure a comfortable ride for your child. Taking larger children or several children with you is child's play with our Simply.Lift NEO e-cargo bike model thanks to the 150 kg load capacity.

One way to transport children with an e-bike is to use a trailer. This can be attached to the rear of the e-bike using a coupling, for example. In trailers, the kids can sit comfortably and are well protected from wind and weather. Many special children's bike trailers are equipped with backrests and armrests, which provide additional comfort.

If you want to take children with you in a bicycle trailer, these rules apply:

  • Up to two children (each no older than seven years) can ride in a bicycle trailer designed for this purpose – ideally strapped in and wearing a helmet. There is no age limit for children with disabilities
  • The trailer manufacturer’s specifications regarding maximum load must be observed.
  • Bicycle trailers may be attached to Pedelecs, which support the rider with their electric motor when pedalling - but not to e-bikes, which also operate without pedalling power.
  • Since 2020, the StVO also allows people to be taken on an (electric) cargo bike if the model is approved for passenger transport. There is no age limit for passengers, which means that you can also transport children older than seven years on a cargo bike designed for this purpose. But here too, pay attention to the load limit in kilograms specified by the manufacturer!

Since 2020, the German Road Traffic Act has also allowed people to be transported on a cargo bike if the model is approved for passenger transport. There is no age limit for passengers, which means that you can also transport children older than seven years on a cargo bike designed for this purpose. But here too, pay attention to the load limit in kilograms specified by the manufacturer.

If you don't want to use a trailer or a front-loading e-bike, it is essential to mount a child seat on the e-bike, especially if you have small children. You can choose from various models for children of different sizes for the luggage or front carrier of the e-bike. To hold on, we recommend a handle that is attached to the seat post or a handrail that runs around the luggage rack - these ensure a feeling of security for children and parents.

Which child seats are the right ones depends largely on the size, age and weight of the child as well as the number of passengers. If you are not sure which accessories you need, just contact us at any time via the live chat in our shop or the contact form .

Overall, e-cargo bikes offer a great way to transport children safely and comfortably while being mobile in a climate-neutral way. It is a great alternative to the car and allows families to be active and environmentally conscious when travelling.
