A wide variety of road users come into contact with each other in road traffic. Cyclists are ranked behind cars in the hierarchy and are increasingly involved in serious accidents. Although cycling is becoming increasingly important as an emission-free form of transport, cycle paths are still not sufficiently developed in many places. The safety of cyclists depends, of course, not only on external influences, but also on many other factors that we would like to address in this blog post - because there are a number of ways in which you can take your own safety into your own hands and be safer on the road.
Put on your helmet!
The helmet is an essential safety tool for cyclists. A properly fitting helmet can prevent serious head injuries in the event of an accident or at least reduce their severity. Unfortunately, many cyclists still do not wear a helmet, either out of convenience or the belief that an accident will not affect them. But a helmet should be a given, especially on busy roads or during sporty bike rides. Parents should set an example for their children and convey to them that wearing a helmet is part of their routine.
What's new
Innovative gadgets such as the Simply.Protect LED bicycle helmet with integrated directional indicators or backpacks with integrated LED lights such as the Simply.Glow LED bicycle backpack can increase the visibility of cyclists in traffic. The integration of radar sensors or assistance systems in cars can also help to improve the safety of cyclists by detecting potential dangers early and warning drivers.
The bike paths
Cyclists' safety also depends heavily on infrastructure. Well-developed cycle paths that are safely separated from the road provide cyclists with a protected space and minimize the risk of accidents with motorized vehicles. City planners and traffic authorities should invest in the development of safe cycle paths and create a well-designed cycling infrastructure. In addition, regular maintenance and signage of cycle paths is important to ensure cyclists' safety.
Be vigilant
Cyclists should not only ensure that their bike is roadworthy, but also adapt their riding behavior to the traffic situation. Compliance with traffic rules is crucial for all road users. For example, cyclists should stop at red lights and observe the right of way rules. Turning and signaling changes of direction are also essential in order to be predictable for other road users. Especially in cities, where traffic is often chaotic, cyclists should use defensive riding strategies and not put themselves in potentially dangerous situations. It is also advisable to reduce speed and be particularly careful on unclear road sections or before exits.
And the drivers?
The safety of cyclists is of course not only in their own hands, but also in the attentiveness and consideration of drivers. Drivers are often not even aware that they are doing something wrong. Information campaigns can help to raise awareness of the needs of cyclists. Drivers should always keep a safe distance from cyclists, leave enough space when overtaking and also pay attention to traffic when getting out of the car. A watchful eye and the willingness to put yourself in the perspective of other road users can help to avoid dangerous situations and improve coexistence on the roads. And drivers must of course also follow the road traffic regulations and not, for example, park on cycle paths or ignore right-of-way rules.
