Challenge of frame production in Europe
Why we choose European manufacturing – and what hurdles need to be overcome
At a time when most bicycle frames are produced in Asia, we have consciously chosen to manufacture our e-cargo bike frames in Europe. However, this path is fraught with numerous challenges. Let's take a look at the reasons for our decision and the hurdles we face along the way.
1. Why Europe?
The decision to produce in Europe is based on several factors:
• Quality and precision : European manufacturers stand for high quality standards and precise workmanship. This ensures long-lasting and reliable products.
• Sustainability : Shorter transport routes reduce CO₂ emissions and support our environmental goals.
• Flexibility : The proximity to our production facilities enables us to respond more quickly to market changes and customer requirements.
2. Challenges of European production
Despite the benefits, we face some significant challenges:
• Costs : Production costs in Europe are higher than in Asia. This is due to higher labor costs, stricter environmental regulations, and higher operating costs.
• Capacity : The European bicycle industry has lost production capacity in recent decades. Forecasts predict that the European market will require 25 to 30 million bicycles annually by 2030. Whether local production can meet this volume remains uncertain.
• Supply chains : Many components are still manufactured in Asia. Integrating these parts into European frames requires careful planning and can lead to delays.
3. Geopolitical tensions and their effects
Relations between the EU and China are strained. Trade conflicts and political differences are affecting the economy:
• Trade policy : The EU has increased tariffs on certain Chinese products, prompting retaliation from China. This dynamic complicates free trade and can lead to price increases.
• Investments : Chinese companies are increasingly investing in European production facilities to circumvent trade barriers. This can intensify competition and put pressure on local manufacturers.
4. Our commitment to European production
Despite these challenges, we remain true to our path:
• Partnerships : We work closely with European suppliers to ensure the quality of our products and strengthen the local economy.
• Innovation : By investing in automated production techniques and new materials, such as the use of plastic frames, we increase the efficiency and competitiveness of our manufacturing.
• Transparency : We openly inform our customers about our production processes and the associated challenges. This builds trust and understanding for our decisions.
Producing our e-cargo bike frames in Europe is a deliberate choice that brings with it both advantages and challenges. Through commitment, innovation, and collaboration, we overcome these hurdles and offer our customers high-quality, sustainably produced products.
